Art & Design
Our leading expert, who ensures Art & Design strategies are linked across the school-age groups, is Miss Dobbins.
Overview
Wherever appropriate, art is linked to topics and the wider curriculum as it gives children the opportunities to bring a topic to life. At Carlton we use nationally celebrated days, such as Remembrance Day, to encourage a love of art and create whole school displays. Children also explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists, designers and different cultures.
Art should enable the children to communicate what they see, feel and think. Children should experiment collaboratively and independently with their ideas, use of colour, texture, form, pattern, different materials and processes. Self-evaluation of work is encouraged and Carlton teaches that it is a safe environment to make mistakes. From this, children are taught how to be resilient and therefore achieve their goals.
Intent
- To engage, inspire and challenge pupils as well as to equip them with the necessary skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.
- To provide and progressive and challenging art curriculum which is sequenced to build on previously taught skills.
- To think critically by evaluating their work to make improvements.
- To foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and have knowledge of artists and designers.
- To understand how art and design has shaped history and contributed to the culture of our nation.
In summary, art at Carlton develops an understanding of the seven elements of art (line, shape, colour, form, value, texture and space) by providing an enriched, broad and balanced curriculum in which will enable all our children to reach their full potential.
Implementation
At Carlton, we follow a progression in skills scheme that ensures each phase covers the National Curriculum objectives but, equal to this, that these objectives and skills are progressed as the children move throughout school. The objectives that each phase cover are illustrated on the curriculum map for each phase. Art and Design objectives are covered through learning about different artists and working on each area of the art curriculum. British values are embedded across the Art and Design curriculum as it promotes individuality whilst showing support and mutual respect for different beliefs and opinions. Children are encouraged to be respectful and supportive in offering advice and opinions on each other’s work. Children study a range of artists from different backgrounds.
Teaching and Learning
At Carlton, a variety of different teaching and learning styles are used throughout school. We have a 2 year rolling programme to ensure all skills are covered. Teachers then choose artists to focus on based on the skill and links to other areas of the curriculum. The common principle is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of Art and Design. Children are given the opportunity to develop their ideas through exploration, using a range of tools and techniques and then evaluate their work to develop it further. This is done through either whole class teaching or individual group teaching, working independently or working collaboratively within a group. Technique and skills are modelled by staff as well as attention being drawn to examples of good work, children are then given time and freedom to explore and create their own. Good examples are used as WAGOLL’s to support. Children are encouraged to give their opinions of their own work and of others, including artists, in constructive ways. Children understand that there is no right or wrong answer and everybody’s work is celebrated. Opportunities are given for the children to engage with a range of different materials and resources including ICT.
Impact
At Carlton, we strive for children to have a love of art and creativity and ensure art is promoted throughout school. We provide children with knowledge about a range of different artists, some local and know about some of the famous pieces of artwork created by them. We strive to create children who are curious and keen to explore. Children will have a good understanding of the key areas of art and will build upon these skills as they move throughout school, they will have had several opportunities to work on each skill and develop further. Children will have art lessons that give them the freedom to experiment and explore, knowing there is no right or wrong answer. Children will understand the importance of being reflective and will be able to effectively evaluate their own work, giving both positives and areas for improvement and be able to give reasons.
